Comfort Dentistry

Gentle Care, Calm Visits

At Paullina Dental Care, we understand that visiting the dentist can cause anxiety or fear for many people. That’s why we offer comfort dentistry options to help you relax and feel at ease throughout your treatment. Whether you’re nervous about a procedure, have a sensitive gag reflex, or just want a more calming experience, we’re here to help you feel comfortable, safe, and supported.

We offer two proven methods to reduce anxiety and increase relaxation: Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) and Mild Oral Sedation with Halcion.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Light Sedation for a Calmer Experience

Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is a safe and effective sedative that’s inhaled through a small nose mask. It produces a mild, calming effect that helps you relax while staying fully awake and responsive.

Level of Consciousness:

You’ll remain awake, aware, and able to respond to instructions. Most patients feel lighter, calmer, and less aware of discomfort or time passing.

Benefits:

  • Fast-acting and wears off quickly

  • Safe for both children and adults

  • No lingering drowsiness—most patients can drive themselves home

  • Adjustable during treatment for your comfort

Risks & Side Effects:

Nitrous oxide is extremely safe, but some patients may experience:

  • Mild nausea if used on an empty or overly full stomach

  • Dizziness or light-headedness

  • Rare allergic reactions or breathing issues (especially with respiratory conditions)

Instructions for Nitrous Oxide Use:

  • Eat a light meal a couple of hours before your appointment

  • Avoid heavy, greasy, or spicy foods before treatment

  • Let us know if you’re pregnant or have breathing conditions like asthma or COPD

  • You can resume normal activities immediately afterward

Oral Sedation with Halcion

Deeper Relaxation for Anxiety-Free Visits

Halcion (triazolam) is a prescription medication taken by mouth before your dental appointment. It provides a deeper level of sedation for patients with moderate to severe anxiety or those undergoing longer procedures.

Level of Consciousness:

You will remain conscious but may feel drowsy, relaxed, or even lightly asleep. You may not remember parts of the procedure, but you’ll be able to respond to verbal cues if needed.

Benefits:

  • Greater anxiety relief than nitrous oxide

  • Easy to take (just one pill)

  • No needles or IVs

  • Allows for more complex treatments to be done in fewer appointments

Risks & Side Effects:

  • Drowsiness that can last several hours

  • Dry mouth or headache

  • Rarely, nausea or paradoxical excitement

  • Not suitable for pregnant patients or those with certain medical conditions or medications

Instructions for Oral Sedation with Halcion:

  • A responsible adult must drive you to and from your appointment

  • Do not eat or drink for at least 6 hours before taking the medication

  • Take the pill exactly as prescribed (usually 1 hour before your appointment)

  • You’ll need to rest at home after your visit—no driving, working, or operating machinery until the following day
